[News] Russian Idiot Priest Says Women Invite Rape
Just read this is the NY Times.
Barf barf.
Archpriest Vsevolod Chaplin has angered women’s groups recently with his comments about female modesty. At a December round table on interethnic relations, he said a woman wearing a miniskirt “can provoke not only a man from the Caucasus,” the predominately Muslim region on Russia’s southern border, “but a Russian man as well.”
“If she is drunk on top of that, she will provoke him even more,” he said. “If she is actively inviting contact, and then is surprised that this contact ends with a rape, she is all the more at fault.”

[Food + Drink Wednesdays] Flaming Strawberry Cupcakes
How gorgeous are these chocolate cupcakes with flaming strawberries? A perfect way to celebrate... well, anything.

The recipe is from Sprinkle Bakes:
Chocolate Cupcakes with Flaming Strawberries
Yield: About 20 cupcakes Cupcakes: 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder 1 1/2 cups all purpose flour 1 1/2 cups sugar 1 1/2 tsp baking soda 3/4 tsp baking powder 3/4 tsp salt 2 eggs 3/4 cup hot water 3/4 cup heavy cream 3 tbsp canola or other vegetable oil 2 tsp vanilla extract Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line muffin tin with cupcake papers and set aside. Sift together cocoa, flour, sugar, baking soda, baking powder and salt into a large bowl. Add eggs, water, heavy cream, oil and vanilla. Mix with a hand held mixer until smooth. Divide batter among muffin cups, filling each half full. Bake for 20 minutes. Let cool before frosting. Frosting: 2 sticks softened butter 4 cups confectioners' sugar 4 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder, sifted In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with whisk attachment, cream together sugar, cocoa and butter; beginning on low speed then increase to high. Beat until fluffy and lightened in color. Transfer mixture to a piping bag fitted with a decorative tip. Frost cupcakes. Strawberries: 18-24 Strawberries - you'll need as many as you have cupcakes Vodka, rum, or your choice of liquor 80 proof or higher (over-proof such as 110 will give you a yellow flame) Hollow the strawberries carefully. If you pierce the side of the strawberry accidentally, start with a new one. Since you'll be setting the liquor aflame, it is important that your strawberry is leak-proof. Set one strawberry atop each frosted cupcake. Fill strawberries with liquor just before lighting (see tips). If you need to light them all at once, (say, for a party) use a turkey baster to quickly fill all the strawberries and a grill lighter in lieu of matches. |

[Get Involved Tuesdays] Adult Literacy
Can you imagine what life would be like if you didn't have the ability to read this blog? If you couldn't read any blog or book or job application that was ever in front of you? That's reality for millions of Americans. In fact, in 2003, 30 million Americans ranked "below basic" in prose literacy.
If you're not happy about this either, volunteer for an adult literacy organization. Adult literacy organizations exist all over the US, and there's probably an organization looking for volunteers right in your community. Check with your local library for more information.
In San Francisco, the program is called Project READ, and it only takes about 2 hours a week of your time. As a reward, you get to teach people the invaluable skill of reading and writing. In some way, words are a vital part of ALL of our lives, whether you enjoy fiction or non-fiction or poetry or news writing. So if reading has ever helped you in any way (it has), you'll understand the need for this kind of volunteer opportunity.
I'm starting my training at the end of this month!

[News] Mixed-sex Handshakes Banned
Wait - whaaaaatttt?
from BBC News:
"Somalia's al-Shabab bans mixed-sex handshakes
Men and women have been banned from shaking hands in a district of Somalia controlled by the Islamist group al-Shabab
Under the ban imposed in the southern town of Jowhar, men and women who are not related are also barred from walking together or chatting in public.
It is the first time such social restrictions have been introduced.
The al-Shabab administration said those who disobeyed the new rules would be punished according to Sharia law.
The BBC's Mohamed Moalimuu in Mogadishu says the penalty would probably be a public flogging.
The militant group has already banned music in areas that it controls, which include most of central and southern Somalia.
Somalia has not had a stable government since 1991.
The UN-backed government only controls parts of Mogadishu and a few other areas."
